When admiral Newport's ship landed in Virginia, on what is now Virginia Beach, one member of the landing party was so moved by it's beauty he wrote: "Heaven and Earth never agreed better to frame a place for man's habitations than Virginia." George Percy's awe of Virginia was well founded, and Virginia Beach is still a very popular place to live. Virginia Beach is the 38th largest city in the country and the largest in the state of Virginia with over 425,000 residents. The city is rather cool, with an average annual temperature of 60 degrees. Also, many meteorologists claim Virginia Beach is in one of the best locations when it comes to avoiding storms. It's south enough to avoid storms originating in the north, yet far enough north to avoid storms coming up from the south.
