Traditionally, candles were used as a source of light. In modern times, due to availability of abundant electricity, candles are no longer in great demand. Candles are now used for their aesthetic value. Scented candles create a striking visual effect and they gives off a pleasant aroma when lit. They also help to create a comfortable and cozy ambiance.

Many candles are made from a selection of special wax blends that consume a predetermined amount of fragrant oils. The candles do not absorb extra oil. Some candles are designed to retain added oil and in turn emit stronger aromas when burned. A few candle manufacturers are attempting to produce super-scented candles.

In modern times, scented candles are often used in aromatherapy. A number of scented candles turn to oil as they burn, so it is advisable to burn them in glass containers or special holders. The most modern variety of scented candle burns as a liquid, without dripping wax or releasing smoke. When the candle burns completely it does not leave behind any residue, and many people find this to be a favorable option to traditional scented candles.

It is important to exercise discretion when purchasing scented candles. If the proper technique is not applied when they are manufactured, the final product may not give out the desired aroma. The most common customer complaint is that candles do not emanate the same scent that they do prior to burning.

Scented candles are available in a wide range of scents. Some replicate the scent of tropical beaches, hot apple pie and out of the ordinary flower scents. An increasing number of people are choosing to purchase scented candles, as they are not always very expensive. However, there are exotic varieties that are very costly. Trendy scents, which are in demand, include cinnamon, spice, jasmine, caramel and sandalwood.
