Noord Holland is the Dutch word for North Holland. It is a peninsula with the North Sea to its west and Ijsselmeer to its east. It is situated in the northwest part of The Netherlands .The capital of Noord Holland is Haarlem. Other cities of the province are Amsterdam, Hilversum, Ijmuiden, Alkmaar, DenHelder and Zaandam. Its terrain mainly consists of low-lying fenland, which is drained by many rivers and canals. The dykes protect the terrain of Noord Holland from damage. It has a total area of 2800 square kilometers. It is a place of great scenic beauty with its drawbridges, tulip fields and windmills. Manufacturing is the maximum revenue yielding activity in this region. Cattle rising, floriculture, agriculture, cheese production, fishing and foreign trade also contribute to the province's revenue.
The province of North Holland was formed in 1804 when Holland was divided into two parts, North Holland and South Holland. The island of Vlieland and Terschelling were ceded to the province of Friesland in 1940.A decade later the island of Urk was ceded to the province of Overijssel.
More than half of Noord Holland is reclaimed land. These lands are held in the form of polders. Polders are an area of low-lying land that has been reclaimed from a body of water and is protected by dikes. They are usually well below sea level.
The International Organization for Standardization has categorized Noord-Holland in its world region code system with the code ISO 3166-2:NL. North Holland is made up of 65 municipalities. Amsterdam, which is a city of north Holland, is the world's largest exporters of diamonds. It also houses beautiful 17th-century buildings, which is a delight for tourists to the city. The quaint old town of Alkmaar is a city of windmills. Cycling is the most preferred form of transportation around here.
