Gilles Villeneuve, a Formula 1 legend
by Jill Woods
The race track located in Bowmanville, Ontario where the Canadian Grand Prix takes place, also called Gilles Villeneuve Cicuit, the name was given after the death of the Formula 1 legend Villeneuve.
Back in 1982 at San Marino, Gainvesville was leading the race, but Ferrari sent a sign to let the drivers know to keep their positions, but Pironi who was a close second pulls ahead holding the victory. After three weeks of tension due to this controversy, Villeneuve was back again at the Belgium Grand Prix, where in the final hour of qualifying, Gilles hit the Jochen Mass's slow moving car in the rear. His Ferrari launches 100 meters into the air comes down nose first and catapults into the air again, crashing into pieces. There was a doctor on the scene, but was impossible to bring him back to live.
Today, Formula 1 drive Villeneuve is remembered, not only for his career in motor racing sport, but also for the Canadian track that was renamed to honor him.
