Cabanas Help Fight Battle Fatigue
by Alan Troyan
While some people find tending to their lawns and gardens tedious, others enjoy it immensely. However, even those in the latter group may now be spending more time lounging around their cabanas, as August can be a slow month for gardening.
The good part is that it's time to reap what you have sown, with tomatoes, melons, garlic, onions, berries, and early apples among the things that are ready for picking this month. Be sure to harvest as soon as they're ripe, lest the fruits (and vegetables) of your labor be lost to pests (or pets).
As for actual gardening chores, the priority now is maintenance. Dead-head your flowers as they wither, not only to keep them looking spectacular, but to prevent them from producing and shedding their seeds, which could preclude the growth of new blooms. If you live in a milder climate with a longer growing season, give annuals another dose of fertilizer.
Water perennials deeply every week. To make sure that the water is reaching their roots, dig a few inches into the ground with a trowel and check to see if the soil is moist. You can divide early-blooming perennials, such as irises, throughout August, and into September; but be sure to give them a good watering in their new location during a cool time of day.
August may also bring in some heavy artillery, as it launches steady barrages of hot, dry days, which can escalate the battle to keep your lawn green. One effective counter measure is to water for at least an hour a couple of times per week. This should be done before noon, as water evaporates faster during the hours of peak sunshine. Adjusting your mower's blades to keep the grass longer can also mitigate damage, as it will conserve water and help roots to stay cooler.
Another strategy is to let your lawn go temporarily dormant. Although it will look a bit ragged for awhile, it will regain its healthy emerald hue with the fall rains. This is a wise choice if you live in a drought-prone region, you're trying to cut down on usage, or you'd simply prefer to use the water to fill up your pool.
No matter which category you are in, you should have some sort of a bunker that will provide refuge from the heat - and other elements as well. The ideal structure should be spacious, durable, weather-resistant, and - since it's going to be in your yard - attractive. One building that fits this description precisely is a cabana from GazeboCreations.com.
