Spas
by Marcus Peterson
The term ‘spa' is an acronym formed from the Latin phrase, ‘sanus per aquam,' meaning ‘health through water.' Traditionally, spas are places having curative mineral springs or where water with some special health-giving properties is available. The old world had many spa towns that were famous for their warm mineral springs.
There are mainly three types of modern spas - the day spa, resort spa, and destination spa. Most day spas provide treatments such as massages and facials on a day-use basis. The resort spa, one of the major facilities of many resorts, provides a better ambience to the guest at the resort. The destination spa, on the other hand, offers a complete spa experience in an overnight setting. People interested in weight loss or jump-starting a health lifestyle can opt for destination spas.
Other types of spas include the club spa, cruise ship spa, and airport spa. The medispa is a recent invention offering treatments under the supervision of a medical doctor. Medispas undertake treatments such as laser resurfacing and Botox injections.
Modern spas are mainly found in luxurious resorts and resort hotels that lie near water sources. Most spas provide special body treatments such a hot baths, massages, pedicures, treatments, aromatherapy, manicures. Among other things, these resorts sometimes offer warm-water hydromassage facilities. Many spas have nutrition and weight guidance, and private trainer's services. A good number of modern spas offer yoga and meditation courses.
Spas come in a wide range of sizes and styles, from a small private inn to a large sprawling resort spa.
