Ever since Guttenberg's first printing machine made print on paper a reality, man has constantly struggled to make the process easier and less time consuming. Over the years, the printing devices have undergone a great evolution, finally culminating in today's modern printers. These computer peripherals have truly revolutionized the way we present our data. From paper to OHP slides and t-shirts, modern day printers have come a long way.

However, few realize that at the heart of a printer is the device called the "cartridge". This is an integral and indispensable part of the printer, as it is what makes the printer function. The cartridge is the active element in the printing process and enables the user to see a wide array of colors and print qualities.

Each printer has its own individual cartridge type. From the basic dot matrix and bubble-jet printers to more advanced inkjet and laser jet printers, each has its own unique features and functionality. Cartridges vary in price, depending upon the type needed and the resolution of the printer. Ideally, most printers have two independent cartridges -- one for color printing and the other for simpler black and white printing. The color cartridge has 3 color elements -- red, blue and green. These three colors are mixed in the right proportion within the cartridge to get the desired color shade while printing. While high-speed printers fire a continuous jet of ink, the other, more commonly used printers send out drops of ink one-at-a-time from a small nozzle.

Printer cartridges are quite expensive and therefore some people prefer purchasing remanufactured, or refilled, cartridges. These are cheaper than brand-new cartridges but can be less reliable and can potentially leak ink. Ink spillage may damage the printer and distort the print quality.

Modern day printer cartridges have not only made the process of printing easier and affordable but also brought about improvement in the quality of prints.
