Singles
by Kevin Stith
The term "single" has a lot of connotations. It could mean someone who is living alone, has no husband or wife, and is out of an exclusive romantic relationship. Furthermore, single also refers to a divorced, widowed or separated man or woman who is not in a dating relationship at the moment.
As you can see by those connotations, the ‘singles' of today are a highly diverse group of people that include ages 18 to 65 years old, or even older.
The American Association of Single People estimates that there are about eighty-six million singles in the United States alone. The number of American singles—mostly in their 20s and 30s—is likely to increase in the coming years. This is due to several factors such as the growing number of single parents, separated and divorced individuals; those marrying at a later age and those who do not want to get married.
According to U.S Census Bureau, most young single men and women who want to get married prefer to be identified as "not yet married" rather than singles. This signifies their intention to marry at a later age. Not all those who wish to get married though are fortunate enough to find a partner. While there are those who chose to remain single for the rest of their lives (like those Christian singles who live the life of Christ), there are those who remain single by chance.
Although living a single life can be associated with loneliness, it can also be a rare opportunity to some and not an unfortunate happenstance. It really depends on how you view or accept your being single. If you are one of the many singles who feel lonely and desperate, remember that happiness is a choice. Live every moment of your life to the fullest and soon you'll feel that completeness you have been looking for.
