In the conventional US MBA model, applicants study a wide breadth of courses in the program's first year, and are allowed to customize the remaining year of coursework according to their career goals. The one-year MBA model is increasingly appealing to US corporations. Even though they are both full-time programs, one-year MBA programs are perfect for students who wish to pursue specialized study that will help them advance in their current field. A recent survey reveals that only 20 percent of business school students are enrolled in two-year, full-time programs. Part-time and weekend programs account for half of the students; the rest are enrolled in executive and online programs. Executive MBA [EMBA] programs are designed to meet the needs of senior managers and are perfect for someone who is already a specialist in his field, but requires a more focused skill set.
An applicant must determine the accreditation degree programs his or her field requires. There are two main types of accreditation in an MBA program: institutional and program-specific. The applicant could face negative consequences if the program does not have accreditation. For example, students who attend an unaccredited law school may not be permitted to sit for the bar examination.
