Don't Forget God
by John Adee
When you pray remember to pray to God not Jesus but in Jesus name. A young preacher, whom I had known long before he became a preacher, asked me how I liked his sermon. I said, ?You forgot about God.? He looked startled and asked, ?What do you mean?? I answered you forgot about God. You did not mention him once during your sermon.? A surprised look came over his face and he replied, ?I didn?t did I.!?
He made up for his oversight in his next sermon. One might say he over did it? He is a very good and sincere man and a good preacher who loves God and believes in Jesus.
Jesus was not on earth to replace God but to bring people to God. His entire teaching was to bring people to believe in and accept God. Many Christians tend to worship Christ and pray to him to fulfill their needs. It is not Christ but God who answers prayer. This is made very plain by the words ?In Jesus name we pray.? By this statement we are asking Jesus to assist us in reaching God. We are not asking Jesus to fulfill our needs him self. Too often in prayer, this is forgotten. It is often said at the end of prayer as rote with the person praying not really talking to God. This is just a phrase which they have been told is proper to say.
Jesus is called ?Lord Jesus? and God is called ?Lord God?. When a person prays to the Lord, no one, including God and Jesus, know who they are praying to. For some that is a copout. Too many prayers, especially loud prayers, are directed to the audience more than to God. Using only the term ?Lord? is a term that is not controversial.
Let us examine excerpts in Jesus own words about the matter.
The Gospel According to Saint John ?I go unto the Father: For my Father is greater than I.? ?I do always those things that please him.? I speak about that which I have seen and heard my Father do just as you speak and do what your Father has done. ?I proceeded forth and came from God: neither came I for my self but he sent me. ?I must work the work of him who sent me.? ?If any one serves me, him will my Father honor.? ?I go unto the father for my Father is greater than I.? ?Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name , he will give to you.? ?I can of my own self do nothing.? ?This is the work of God that you believe on him who he has sent.? ?My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.?
While the above are all selected from Saint John, many references can be selected from the additional Gospels, all in Jesus own words.
It is my belief that one should pray to God and at the same time honor Jesus.
