BIG BLUE CAT DAY!
I launched my boat at the Cincinnati Public landing ramp that beautiful November morning. I was able to net a handful of gizzard shad for bait at the ramp. I headed up river to my favorite spot. Got set up and had my lines in the water by 08:30.
I got a good hard bite on one of my rods at 08:40, some how the fish knocked off the cut shad. I caught my first blue cat of the day at 09:00. I knew it was a big cat as soon as I had set the hook. That fish just did not want to come up off the bottom of the river. It took some time to get the fish up next to the boat. Next task was to net the fish for I was alone in the boat. Finally had to set the rod down and brace it while I got the net under the fish. Once I got this fish inside the boat I had to sit down for a few minutes to rest from the battle.
As I was trying to measure out the big cat, the other rod bent over. Once again the fight was on with another big fish. Finally was able to get this one into the back of my boat. The first blue weighed 28 pounds and was 34 inches long. The second blue was 25.5 pounds and 31 inches long.
Had a little time to bait up and cast out my lines into the river. I was getting my camera out to take photos of the 2 big fish. My outside rod starting bouncing in the rod holder; this third cat just hammered the bait. This fish was also a big strong fish, it was another blue cat! This fish weighed in at 26 pounds and 33.5 inches long. All three of these fish hit the fresh cut shad I had netted that morning.
Once I got all the photos of the big blue cats I returned them to the Ohio River. They all swam away to give another person in the future the same thrills I had have them on the other end of my line.
The wind started blowing stronger and stronger after that to the point of white caps. That is when I packed it in for the day. I headed back home at 12:30. The 28 pound blue was the biggest catfish of all the 2007 season. It was also the biggest blue cat I have ever caught! The total of the poundage for those 3 fish for one outing was the highest of my whole season. My second highest poundage total was 66 pounds for 7 catfish caught on my last trip in 2007.
You can understand why I am looking forward to returning this spot in 2008. I also intend to checkout a few more spots that did provide for some action as well. I wish every one tight lines whenever you get on the water.
