March 30, I finally got my boat on the Ohio River for my first catfishing trip of the year. There was some fog up river from the ramp but not much down river. I headed for the safer down river sites to get started. The river was around 27 ft. clearing up well but decent amount of current, water temperature around 47 degrees.

I got my lines in the water at 08:00, fished for about 40
minutes. No bites at all. Got my boat head down to where the BB river boats used to dock and checked out the area with my fish finder. The bank is mainly mud, so not fishable unless there is a long dry spell. The water drops off in a deep ledge of 25 feet about 50 feet out from the bank. I did not see any fish showing up on the fish finder when I went back and forth over that area. There is a storm sewer out flow that went about 30 feet deep only about 15 feet from the bank. I will be checking that spot out when the water gets a little warmer.

My second fishing stop was just up river of the Ky. pier of the Clay Wade Baily Bridge. I did spot a few fish in the area, but they were not hungry. I waited about 40 minutes then head down river. This time I set up by the Ky. pier of the I-75 Bridge. I did finally get a couple of taps on my cut shad. Never was able to get a strong bite for a pull on the line. Now the fog had burned off so I headed back up
river to where I had some action last Fall.

The 4th spot, I got my lines in the water just above the Hooters Restaurant a little after 10:40. I got some decent taps on the shad. Then at 11:15 I hooked my first catfish of the year. The nice channel cat checked out as 22 1/2 inches, and 5 pounds. He went for some cut skipjack. My digital camera battery was low so just had to take a picture of the fish in the bottom of the boat. Wanted to get a self timed photo with me HOLDING the fish but the
battery was just too weak. That was the end of the action there.

My last stop of the day was at the Ky. pier of the Purple People Bridge. I stayed there for about 30 minutes, with no bites. A strong wind started to blow up river, so I decided to call it a day. All in all was a good day to be out and check out my boat & motor as well as my fishing gear. Hope to get back out next week to boat some more catfish. Tight lines to all.

I have been catfishing around Cincinnati for over 40 years. The past 15 years I have used a small fishing boat to check out different spots on the Ohio and Licking rivers in the Cincinnati area. I have a web site dealing with Catfishing in the Cincinnati area with tips on baits river stage info and fishing spots from the Bank or boat.
