My fist catfishing trip at night in several years. Met up with 2 new catfishermen on thier boat to fish on the Ohio River.

I met up with my new fishing contacts at their boat. They
used their casting nets to get a load of thin fin shad right at the dock. They placed the fish in their homemade 50 gallon tank that worked great in keeping the shad alive. Got our lines in the water at 5:30 p.m. It was very hot even with an up river breeze. The wind did cause some problem with the large boat so high in the water keeping the boat steady.

According to the depth finder the water temperature was 83
degrees! They did hook a couple very small flatheads and a
couple small channel cats on shrimp. They said that was the first time they ever caught flatheads with shrimp. The
second spot got the lines in at 6:30. One of the guys
boated a 2.5 pound channel cat just a few minutes later.
Had a couple of bites after that so pulled anchor headed for next place.

Next stop was at their favorite spot at 7:50. 8:08 the
owner of the boat got a 1 pound channel cat. He then
caught a 3.5 pounder at 8:55. The other guy caught another
small flathead and small channel cat. I finally got a solid bite and hooked my only fish. This one was a channel cat that was 6.5 pounds. It was also taken with shrimp as the bait. I had 2 light taps the rest of the night. One other channel was caught before we packed it in for the night.

The fish were biting very lightly, not really running with
it at all. The guys were saying it was the worst night they had all this season. The hot bait was the shrimp, 9 out of 10 fish boated were taken on shrimp. Only one on cut shad, nothing on the live shad!

All the fish were released to grow bigger. That was the
first time in a few year that I have fished at night. With
the hot weather hanging on, that is about the only time to
fish. I am looking forward to our next trip out with these
new fishing friends. We are all hoping the fish will be in
a better feeding mood next we wet a line.
