A tuxedo is a complete outfit that includes a man's dress jacket, trousers, a bow tie, and, often, a cummerbund [a pleated sash worn around the waist]. It is worn at weddings, proms, college functions, or black tie affairs, and was named after a trendy country club at Tuxedo Park, New York.
Purchasing a classic tuxedo is a sensible investment if you anticipate wearing it on a couple of occasions. If you do not own a tuxedo, renting one is inexpensive. Expect to pay $50 for a standard tuxedo to $250 for designer wear. A standard tuxedo jacket features satin or grosgrain lapels and a boutonniere hole. A cutaway jacket, which is short in front [above the belt line] and split in the back, is a chic alternative. You can go with the classic bow tie-and-cummerbund look, or a vest-and-tie combination. You will also be able to choose between a single-, double- or triple-breasted jacket with peak or notch lapels. The single-breasted jacket with notch lapels is a classic style.
Formal tuxedo trousers feature a black satin stripe along the seams. Since they do not have belt loops, the trousers should be well tailored or worn with button-in suspenders. Shirts that are generally worn with a tuxedo include those with a wing collar, turndown collar and mandarin collar. A wing collar is found in the traditional shirt and is coupled with a bow tie and cummerbund.
A conventional tuxedo is worn with a bow tie and a vest or cummerbund. Its pleats should face upwards and should complement the bow tie. In terms of colors, a conventional tuxedo comes in black or white, but you can also find a variety of grey, silver and ivory tuxedos.
