The difference between regular foam and what is known as memory foam is that that the latter is made from a material that has chemicals added to it, which increase its viscosity. And an increase in viscosity leads to an increased level of density. This material that forms the base of memory foam is polyurethane.
Because of its increased level of density and viscosity, this type of foam is also popularly known as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. The range of this foam differs in accordance with the level of chemicals used. This implies that chemicals play a vital role in determining the foam's density. The foam can be made to be firmer when temperatures drop, and softer when temperatures rise.
The high-density memory foam has been created to react to body temperature, thereby making the mattress comfortable at all times by molding itself according to the body shape resting on it. In contrast, low-density memory foam is sensitive to pressure and it takes body shape in accordance to the body pressure exerted.
The memory foam was actually created in the initial stages to be used for the various stage programs, as it was able to evenly distribute the pressure along the entire surface. However, it was not used for these programs and found a place in the world of medicine to ease the bedsores caused due to elongated periods of being bedridden.
Presently, memory foam is being used largely in creating mattresses and pillows, since its cost has been reduced substantially. In fact, most doctors recommend memory foam mattresses and pillows for comfortable and safe sleep protecting the entire back.
