Asbestos exposure is associated with all types of lung cancer, and with a rare type of cancer called malignant mesothelioma, which affects the tissue lining the lungs called the pleura. This gap between exposure and disease may delay diagnosis until the lung cancer is advanced and less amenable to treatment.
