'Taking Care of You'
Copyright © 2005 Hanne Andersen
It's important to care for your health and to be prepared
when you live alone. I had been fighting quite the case
of bronchitis and while enduring the 'bed rest' I thought
of what I consider important 'must haves'.
Have a good network of family and friends. Get to know
your neighbours - people like to give and help when needed.
Keep important phone numbers, or as in my case, emails
close by. Your Doctor, pharmacy, hospital, ambulance and
friends/family.
It's a given to keep on a healthy diet, as once illness sets
in the appetite goes out the window. Be sure to drink
plenty of water. Keep up on your vitamins, minerals and
herbal supplements (if you take them).
If possible, have a good Doctor that can make themselves
available on short notice.
Keep something on hand for when you know you have a
fever. I always have Tylenol Extra Strength - and never
let it go too long or get too high. Fevers are actually an
important part to getting well - it's your body's own defense
to 'burn out' whatever ails you, but letting it get out of hand
could be very dangerous to your health.
Tea, honey, lemon and a big box of tissues. The first 3 to
soothe your throat and warm you, and the tissue for when
you need to have a good cry. We're allowed to have a
good cry when we're not feeling well and there's not the
added comfort of a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen
to us whine. Or maybe it is just to use on that nose that
keeps running away.
By the way, why DO they say 'the nose runs', when you
know it's your feet that do the running? Same 'theys' call
a bone in your elbow 'the funny bone' when we know it
sure isn't funny when we hit it!
Anyway, take good care of your health
and it will take care of YOU.
