Brushing teeth is important, but doing it incorrectly will simply bear the same results as not brushing at all. This is a quick guide to the proper procedure for brushing your teeth.

Although most people know why brushing their teeth is important, many simply do not know the correct way to brush teeth. It is important that you learn the correct way in which to brush your teeth to avoid plaque, gum disease and trips to the dentist that can be avoided.

First of all, you should dampen your toothbrush with water before you add the toothpaste to it. Be sure that once you have your toothbrush damp, you turn off the water faucet. While it is important to brush your teeth properly, it is also important to be conservative when doing so. Apply toothpaste to your toothbrush but only enough to actually do a good job of brushing. There is no need to cover your entire toothbrush with toothpaste, an amount the size of a pea is sufficient. Any more is simply being wasteful.

The brushing procedure is actually the same whether you are using a traditional toothbrush or an electric one. You need to bear in mind that it is important to brush each tooth individually. First, begin by brushing the front teeth, then move on to the back teeth. Brush each tooth thoroughly, including the backs and edges of each. Once you have finished brushing your teeth, you should always gently brush your gums. This will keep your gums stimulated and help to ward off certain diseases such as Gingivitis and Periodontitis.

Finally, brush your tongue. This helps to alleviate any bacteria within the mouth and also helps you to have fresher breath. Once you have finished brushing all teeth, your gums and your tongue, rinse your mouth with clear, cool water. Be sure to also rinse your toothbrush thoroughly, cover it and put it away. Covering your toothbrush is vital for preventing the buildup of airborne bacteria, including microscopic particles from the toilet. Be sure to also re-cap the toothpaste and put it away as well.

You should always floss after brushing teeth, or prior to brushing whichever you prefer, to ensure that you have removed all food particles from between your teeth. You can also use a mouthwash that contains fluoride or one that has an anti-plaque ingredient to ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy. Finally, visit your dentist at least two times each year for professional cleaning and to ensure the health of your teeth and gums.
