Owning a business is not necessarily the same as handling every conceivable task associated with it. I'm sure there are some people out there who can manage, handle inventory, take care of all of the accounting, and flesh out wonderful designs. I'm also sure they make up only a fraction of a percentage of business owners.
There are certain types of jobs I excel at. This is certainly true of most people. Bringing in the right kind of people to help you deal with all the tasks you don't have a lot of experience with is important. If you don't feel you're up to developing a good graphic design for your advertising than bring in an expert.
Ad designers play a very important role in a company. What they create is often going to be the first thing a person sees in relation to your company. If you're planning on handing out color flyers, this is the first time many people will have ever heard of you, so don't you want to make sure those flyers are as perfect as possible?
Understanding what goes into being a designer is helpful for those looking to hire one out. Know the right kinds of questions you need to ask in order to get the best person for the job.
Some of the more simple questions are going to deal with payment and work time. How long it will take them to finish their job can be a very important detail if you already have a deadline set for when you want to begin sending out your advertisements. Be careful to look into how long your designer will take before committing yourself to anything else. It would be a shame to have something like a postcard marketing campaign all ready to go except for the all important design work, which is taking longer than you had expected.
Not all design work is exactly the same, either. If you need someone to make a beautiful, full color business card, be sure to ask him or her if they have experience with this particular medium. This doesn't mean flexibility shouldn't be considered. After all, perhaps they have experience in another field that is strikingly similar. Ultimately this will be up to you to decide whether you're willing to hire someone with only similar experience.
It's always nice to be able to look at a portfolio of the designer's work no matter what type of work you plan on having them do. You don't want your first peek at a finished product by them to be right before you're about to start your postcard printing. See what they're style is like and decide if they're right for the style of the project you're aiming for.
There is no one right or wrong way to hire a designer. Sometimes just talking to the person will give you a good feel for whether or not you think they'll be able to create the kinds of images you're after. No matter what, it will always be best to understand as much as possible about the job in order to give yourself a good grip on the situation.
