Private Health Insurance: Why You Shouldn’t Be Without It
by amy vale
In some countries, private health insurance is seen to be a waste of money. But here in Australia, we have some of the best insurers available that will help keep you and your family healthy. Some people can’t see the benefits of holding a private health insurance policy, but in reality, you really can’t afford to be without one.
Hospital Cover
Life has its way of throwing us curve balls every now and then and one of the most inconvenient and costly ones is an illness. Imagine your doctor finds something wrong with you and you need to go in for surgery. In a public hospital, there are waiting lists, no choice of doctor, rarely are there private rooms and when a spot opens up, you must take it or you might very well miss out. Private health insurance changes all of that. You can choose your doctor, you can choose the hospital, private rooms are available, there are far shorter waiting lists, if any - and you are sure to get the immediate care you need.
Starting to sound good? There’s still more to come!
Extras
Most private health insurance policies also offer “extras” cover. This is for everyday health care from doctors like optometrists, dentists, chiropractors and physiotherapists. So, if you go to the dentist for a simple check-up, depending on your policy, you’ll get some kind of refund. This goes for all of the treatments that are listed on your policy. Often the refund can vary from policy to policy, depending on how many times you’ve claimed and the level of cover you have chosen. There can be significant savings for singles, couples and families however if you choose the right type of policy.
Ambulance
When someone needs an ambulance, you never hesitate, you just call 000. But after the ambulance has been and gone, there can be a huge bill for the short ride the patient has taken if they don’t have ambulance cover. The reason for this is because of the specialist equipment that the ambulance carries onboard, the on-call nature and urgency that comes with this kind of facility and also the highly trained paramedics who tend to the person in need. You can take out cover that is only for ambulance services however, many private health insurance policies come with ambulance cover as standard. Always check to make sure though, as some basic levels of cover do not include this service.
Private health insurance should really be part of every person’s health plan. Not only does it give you peace of mind, but also can cover you from expensive medical bills in emergencies, relieves the public health system tremendously and allows you to have more choices if you need to go into hospital. There are many reputable health insurance providers out there; it’s just a matter of finding out which one will suit your personal needs and requirements!
